adding HDFS services to a virtual cloudera node

The key to adding a Centos node to Cloudera Manager is setting up Java. Since Centos comes with Iced Tea, and you want to install Cloudera Hadoop on a Centos node, you need to add Sun/Oracle’s Java. First, get Sun’s Java here:http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Then, on the Centos node, issue “java -version”, and you should see Iced Tea. then install the Sun version of Java. Then issue “alternatives – –install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_5/bin/java 2″. Follow that with “alternatives – –config java” and select the proper number (in my case 3). Then hit “java -version” and you should see the Sun version of Java. Now go to Cloudera Manager and install the node. Eventually you’ll see this:
